This iconic BLESS design dates from early in the duo’s multi-tasking fashion/design project, gracing collection N°11, the Bless Shop, a Travelling Selling Exhibition.

Featuring flowing locks of real human hair in the place of bristles, it inevitably recalls Surrealist objects – an association dismissed by the designers, who have insisted upon its status as a tool to preserve hair as a souvenir, in keeping with Victorian mourning traditions.

The offbeat design, garnering traction on the web at the time, is today part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago – a slice of design history fit to hang on the wall or worship.

Publicity-shy founders of the unclassifiable label BLESS

Paris-based Desirée (Austrian) and Berlin-based Ines (German) graduated in fashion in the mid-90s, meeting at a drawing competition. Right from the start – when they borrowed money from their parents to place a cryptic ad for a fur wig in i-D, attracting the attention of Maison Martin Margiela – their label Bless has defied convention. Embracing unisex fashion, utilitarian-but-unusual design objects and much more besides, today they run two boutiques, in Paris and Berlin, that showcase their fiercely eclectic interests.
