Balthus's Ashtray by Katerina Jebb

About
Made in

An exact ceramic replica of Balthus' original ashtray, serving as a support for a scale 1 transfer of the image scanned in 2008. The artist Katerina Jebb explains how the project came about:  “When, in 2008, I entered Balthus' workshop at the Grand Chalet de Rossinière, left intact since his death in 2001, to proceed with a scanner to an exhaustive digital inventory of the objects therein, I was struck by the feeling that time is motionless, suspended there. The tangible presence of objects seems to me to be confused with their image. Among them, one particularly fascinates me. It is an ashtray containing butts and ashes left by the heavy smoker Balthus. The cigarettes, long extinguished in this ashtray, awaited, in a poignant way, the human presence. Still there, seven years later, they made tangible the breath that had consumed them, close to the last. For my part, to scan objects, so that my hand is secure and the image clear, I hold my breath, or rather, I lock myself in myself. This is all in this picture of Balthus’s last ashtray: the story of passing from one breath to another, and an imminent departure.”

Katerina Jebb is a British artist born in 1962, she currently lives and works in Paris. Balthus’s Ashtray is a limited edition of 200 pieces and the artist's first collaboration with WE DO NOT WORK ALONE.

Female collective dedicated to unusual, artist-designed objects

Louise, Charlotte and Anna met in 2008 at the Sorbonne while studying for a Master’s in curation and contemporary art. As a collective (initially called KGM) they went on to organise exhibitions in artist-run spaces but wanted to more actively support artists. The solution was We Do Not Work Alone, an agency that commissions artists to produce unusual everyday objects in limited editions, connecting the dots between art and the everyday. Their project and retail space opened late 2020.
