Togo-born Amah settled in Paris as a teenager, briefly studying marketing before a decade working as a casting director. There followed a move into food – and, in 2013, a year after he launched ‘afrobrunches’ at the memorable Comptoir Général, Marché Noir was born in the form of a vintage boutique on the restaurant’s mezzanine. The brand initially focused on second-hand clothes sourced in Togolese markets – turning trash to treasure – but over time Amah also began creating his own singular pieces revisiting traditional African wear.
